On Thursday, the Nepal government lifted the ban on the social media platform TikTok. A minister informed that the decision was made during the Cabinet meeting held that day.
The Nepalese government has decided to permit TikTok to resume its operations, but with specific conditions in place, according to Prithvi Subba Gurung, the Minister for Communication and Information Technology.
Gurung mentioned that this decision follows Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s directive to ensure equal treatment for all social media platforms and to draft the necessary laws and regulations. The ministry, acting on this directive, developed a proposal that culminated in the decision.
TikTok must now meet four key conditions before it can restart its services in Nepal.
- From now on, TikTok is required to contribute to promoting Nepal’s tourism
- Invest in initiatives for digital literacy
- Aid in enhancing the public education system
- Be cautious about the language used on its platform.
TikTok has agreed to fulfill these conditions.
Previously, on November 13, 2023 , the government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” had decided to impose a ban on TikTok.
