“When you come to Everest, you know that there are lot of people”
Famous mountain climber Ueli Steck died in an accident on Sunday near Mt. Everest. Steck who was also known as “The Swiss Machine” was preparing to climb Everest. He and his climbing partner Tenji Sherpa were going to attempt ‘Everest-Lhotse Traverse’ without supplementary oxygen. This new route also known as Hornbein Route was pioneered by American climbers Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld in 1963.”
“Route : Base Camp – Camp-2 – Hornbein Couloir – Summit of Everest – South Col – Lhotse Traverse – Summit of Lhotse – Base Camp.”
At the Base Camp (Nepal) he was being interviewd by Umesh Zirpe for Dream Wanderlust.According to Dinesh Bhattarai (director-general at Nepal’s Department of Tourism) as quoted on Aljazeera English News “He skidded off about 1,000 metres from camp … Other climbers ascending Everest saw him and asked for his rescue.”
However, according to a message on his website, “The exact circumstances are currently unknown.” The statement on his website further states that “The family is infinitely sad and asks the media builders to refrain from speculation about the circumstances of his death due to respect for Ueli. As soon as there are reliable findings on the causes of Uelis Steck’s death, the media will be informed.”
Ueli was 40 years old.
